Last Beverley Sister Dies At 99: Can Gen Z Relate To The Music

Would the average Gen Z listener recognise the Beverley Sisters?
Probably not. Yet long before the era of Spotify playlists and TikTok hits, the British vocal trio was among the biggest names in entertainment, captivating audiences with close harmonies, matching outfits and wholesome performances.
That chapter officially came to an end with the death of Teddie Beverley, the last surviving member of the iconic group, at the age of 99.

Born Hazel Pamela Chinery in London in 1927, Teddie performed alongside her twin sister, Babs, and elder sister, Joy. Together, they became the Beverley Sisters, rising to fame in the 1950s and 1960s with more than 250 recordings, including classics such as I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus, Little Drummer Boy and Little Donkey.
The trio became television favourites, performed in five Royal Variety Performances and shared stages with entertainment legends including Bob Hope and Danny Kaye. Their polished harmonies and family-friendly image made them one of Britain’s most successful female vocal groups of the post-war era.
While their music may be unfamiliar to many younger audiences today, their influence helped shape the blueprint for female vocal groups that followed.

The sisters reunited for performances in the 1980s after stepping away from the spotlight, and in 2006, all three were awarded MBEs for their contributions to entertainment.
With Joy’s death in 2015, Babs’ in 2018 and now Teddie’s passing on June 17, the curtain falls on a trio that defined an era of British popular music.

For Gen Z, the Beverley Sisters may be a discovery. Their story is a reminder that behind today’s chart-toppers are generations of performers whose voices helped shape modern music
