The Joint Health Sector Unions says the strike will continue until the implementation of the adjusted consolidated health salary structure is implemented.

The Joint Health Sector Unions, JOHESU, on Friday announced an indefinite strike action with effect from midnight.

It said the strike would continue until the implementation of the adjusted consolidated health salary structure is implemented.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, the National Chairman of the Medical and Health Workers Union, Kabiru Minjibri, said the planned strike was expected to disrupt medical services and academic activities across the country.

According to him, the government has made no effort to reach an agreement with the unions.

The decision followed a closed-door meeting after a series of ultimatums and threatened strikes by JOHESU, citing the government’s failure to fulfill key agreements.

The meeting had in attendance the coalition of health workers’ unions in Nigeria, comprising organisations such as the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria, among other institutions.

JOHESU has been negotiating with the government for years, but the issues remain unresolved.

The union has expressed frustration over the government’s delay in fulfilling key agreements, including the Memorandum of Understanding signed on October 29, 2024.

The Minister of State for Health, Iziaq Salako, said the union’s demands were being carefully attended to.

Health Threat Of Global Plastics Projected To Soar

The health burden linked to plastic pollution is projected to rise sharply, with years of healthy life lost expected to more than double from 2.1 million in 2016 to 4.5 million by 2040, according to a new study published in The Lancet Planetary Health. Researchers warn that plastic production, use, and disposal—driven largely by fossil fuels—constitute a growing global public health crisis. They note that recycling alone offers limited relief, stressing that the most effective solution is reducing the production of unnecessary plastic at its source.
