National Assembly Committee Approves New State for South-East.

The Joint Committee of the Senate and House of Representatives on Constitution Review has approved the creation of an additional state in the South-East geopolitical zone.

According to a statement from the committee’s media unit, the resolution was reached on Saturday during a two-day retreat held in Lagos, where lawmakers reviewed 55 proposals for state creation across the country.

The session was chaired by the Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, and co-chaired by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu. The lawmakers agreed that, in the spirit of fairness and equity, the Federal Government should establish a new state in the South-East to bring the region at par with others.

Kalu, who has been a leading voice in the campaign for additional state creation in the region, emphasized that the move would give the South-East people a greater sense of belonging in the Nigerian federation.
