There was palpable tension in Ukwa East Legislative Council over new leadership tussle as five (5) Councillors allegedly acting on the orders of the Honourable Commissioner for Information,Prince Okey Kanu stormed the council secretariat on Tuesday 25th November,2025 ,beating up the Clerk/Head of Personnel Management of the Council,Mr Maxwell Ahukanna,destroying government properties and brutally smashing the Mace on the face of the Majority Leader of the Legislative Council,Hon.Obinna Ukaegbu while brandishing dangerous weapons including matchets,axes, bottles and other weapons.

The crisis rocking the Ukwa East legislative assembly over the leadership of the local government escalated yesterday following an attempt by five Councillors loyal to the Honourable Commissioner for Information to impeach the leader of the Legislative Council,Hon Kingsley C. Belle who is accused of being loyal to the Mayor of the Ukwa East Local Government Area,Hon.Chibunna Akara over his refusal to give them one million naira (1,000,000.) each to the five Councillors on what they termed as money for the approval of the budget been undertaken by the Mayor of the Council.

The attack which was carried out by the five Councillors who are loyal to the Honourable Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu were reportedly coordinated by the Councillor representing the Ikwuorie ward,Hon.Emmanuel Ekeke who is the Councillor representing the Honourable Commissioner for Information his Azumini ward counterpart,Hon.Bright Bennett Ekeke.

According to the reports gathered, there have been nocturnal meetings between the Honourable Commissioner for Information and the five Councillors loyal to him with the aim of causing havoc and installing a leadership that would be loyal to the Honourable Commissioner for Information, thereby, destabilising the Hon.Chibunna Akara led administration in the Local Government Council.

It could be recalled, that there have been reports of leadership tussle between the Honourable Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu and the Mayor of Ukwa East Local Government,Hon.Chibunna Akara over who controls the affairs of the Governor's faction of the Labour Party in the Local Government Area.

As of the time of this report,the Clerk/Head of Personnel Management of Ukwa(HPM),Mr.Maxwell Ahukanna and the Majority Leader of the Legislative Council,Hon.Obinna Ukaegbu who were brutally beaten up and wounded are said to be receiving medical attention in one of the hospitals in the area..
