BREAKING NEWS: Public Outcry in Abia as Citizens Demand Transparency on Billions Received from Federal Government
Umuahia, Nigeria – October 10, 2025
There is growing public outcry in Abia State as residents and civil society organizations demand full transparency and accountability from the state government over the billions of naira reportedly received from the federal government for infrastructural development and public services.
Despite allocations earmarked for major road construction, dual carriageways, flyovers, pension payments, healthcare, and other essential public amenities, many communities across the state continue to grapple with poor infrastructure, decaying public services, and unpaid entitlements.
Frustration is mounting among pensioners who allege continued neglect despite federal disbursements intended to offset backlogs of unpaid pensions and gratuities. Several localities have also raised alarm over impassable roads and the lack of progress on promised dual carriageways and flyover projects.
"We were promised quality roads and better healthcare, but all we see are potholes and abandoned projects," said a resident of Aba, one of the state’s commercial hubs. "Where is the money going?"

Civil society groups, including the Abia Transparency Forum and Concerned Citizens for Good Governance, are calling for a full audit of funds received and spent. They have urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to intervene and ensure the state government is held accountable.
"We demand a breakdown of how every naira received from the federal government has been utilized," a spokesperson for the group said. "The people deserve transparency and results, not silence and excuses."

As the pressure mounts, the Abia State Government has yet to issue a detailed public statement addressing the concerns or providing a breakdown of federal funds received and their application.
Citizens are planning peaceful demonstrations and town hall meetings in the coming weeks to press home their demands for responsible governance, accountability, and improved service delivery.
