Environment: Waste Water To Clean Energy: Japanese Engineers Harness The Power Of Osmosis

Engineers in Fukuoka, Japan, have launched the world’s second osmotic power plant, which generates electricity by harnessing the natural movement of water between treated sewage and concentrated seawater. The system uses a semi-permeable membrane to allow freshwater molecules to flow toward saltier water, creating pressure that spins a turbine and produces energy. Although still in its early stage and costly to operate, the project is seen as a promising step toward turning wastewater and seawater into a stable source of renewable electricity.
