Environment: France Pushes Back Plastic Cup Ban By Four Years

The French government has postponed a planned ban on single-use plastic cups by four years, shifting the implementation date to January 1, 2030, citing difficulties in finding viable alternatives. The ban, initially scheduled to take effect on January 1, was delayed following a review by the Ministry for Ecological Transition, which questioned the technical feasibility of fully eliminating plastic from cups at this time. Environmental groups have criticised the move as a setback in the fight against plastic pollution, arguing that workable solutions already exist but lack sufficient investment and regulatory support. France has introduced several measures to curb single-use plastics, but campaigners say progress remains slow despite a 2020 law targeting the complete phase-out of such products by 2040.
