UNICAL VC reveals stance on sex-for-marks syndrome

November 30, 2025

The outgoing Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar (UNICAL), Prof. Florence Obi, has said that she wants to be remembered for fighting sexual harassment and delayed results.

Obi made the remark on Friday night at an event in Calabar, organised by the university to mark the end of her five-year tenure as the 11th substantive vice-chancellor of the institution.

Obi, whose tenure expires on November 30, was appointed vice-chancellor on September 10, 2020, but officially assumed office on December 1, 2020.

She said her commitment to protecting students, especially the female ones, remained one of her greatest achievements as vice-chancellor.

She said: “I fought against sexual predators and ensured the timely release of students’ results to curb frustration within the institution.”

While expressing fulfillment at completing her tenure and thanking God for enabling her to finish strong after five years in office, she said that she would return to the classroom because teaching remained her passion.

Earlier, she addressed staff and students outside her office during a carnival-like, marching-out parade in her honour, thanking them for their support throughout her administration.

She also encouraged them to support her successor to enable him to succeed and take the university to greater heights.

“This institution has recorded significant growth and I am confident that my successor will advance the progress already made,” she said.

Under her leadership, the largest solar power plant in Cross River was built in UNICAL, ensuring stable electricity for the university and its teaching hospital.

Other achievements included upgrading the Faculty of Education to a College, getting Mass Communication accredited, and being elevated to a Faculty.

Her administration also constructed new hostels, introduced departmental scholarships, built a fire service station, and completed the Law Faculty complex.

Just In: SMART SCHOOL OR SMART LOOTING? ANOTHER RECEIPT FROM IGBERE

This image is Elu-Okwe Primary School in Amaukwu Igbere, Bende LGA—a living, breathing school, not a rumour or propaganda. Yet the Abia State Government claimed it was demolished because it had been awarded for upgrade to a smart school. Today, no smart school exists. The roof is failing, classrooms leak, and pupils still run for cover whenever it rains. Despite community appeals for urgent renovation, intervention was halted on the grounds that the project had been “awarded.” Months later, nothing has happened. This raises serious questions about the state’s claim of spending ₦100 billion on public school repairs. Smart schools do not disappear, and infrastructure does not exist only on paper. Abia people are no longer asking for explanations—they are demanding results. Where are the smart schools?

Just In: Press Release From the Office of the Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives

The Office of the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives has dismissed as false and misleading the Abia State Government’s claims concerning infrastructure projects attracted by Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu. The office clarified that the land along the Umuahia–Bende Road was communally donated, not allocated by the state government, and described allegations of unauthorized demolition of school facilities as baseless. It further accused the Otti administration of deliberate propaganda aimed at undermining genuine development efforts, while reaffirming the Deputy Speaker’s commitment to attracting critical infrastructure to Abia State in the interest of the people.
