The National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has officially handed over the leadership of the nation’s electoral body to Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, who now assumes office as the Acting National Chairman of INEC.T

he transition took place on Tuesday during an ongoing meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) at the INEC headquarters in Abuja.Professor Yakubu, who was appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari on October 21, 2015, and assumed office on November 9 of the same year, has been at the helm of affairs for nearly a decade, overseeing two general elections and several off-cycle polls across the country.

In his brief address during the handover, Yakubu expressed confidence in Agbamuche-Mbu’s capacity to steer the affairs of the Commission, urging the commissioners and directors to extend their full support and cooperation to her as she takes up the leadership role pending the appointment of a substantive chairman.

Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, who now becomes the Acting Chairman, is the oldest serving National Commissioner in INEC and has played key roles in various electoral processes since her appointment. Her assumption of office marks a significant moment in the Commission’s leadership transition, coming at a time the electoral umpire is expected to consolidate on recent reforms and strengthen preparations for upcoming off-cycle and national elections.
