Bayelsa Governor Douye Diri, 23 Lawmakers Resigns from PDP
Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has tendered his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), alongside 23 members of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, in what political observers describe as one of the most dramatic shake-ups in the state’s recent political history.

The development, which sources confirmed on Wednesday, comes amid rising tension within the PDP over internal disputes and alleged dissatisfaction with the party’s national leadership. Governor Diri, who was elected under the PDP platform in 2020 and re-elected in 2023, is yet to formally announce his next political destination.
Insiders, however, suggest that advanced discussions are ongoing between the governor and key leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC), raising speculation about a possible defection to the ruling party. Others within his camp are reportedly weighing options within the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

If confirmed, Diri’s exit—along with the mass resignation of lawmakers—would mark a significant political realignment in the Niger Delta region and deal a major blow to the PDP’s influence in the South-South.
