Ebonyi cleric arrested for having sex with church member

The Ebonyi State Police Command has arrested the General Overseer of Champion the Truth Cathedral, Bishop Ndibueze Okorie Onyagoziri, for allegedly having repeated sex with a 22-year-old female sickle cell patient in the state. Newsmen gathered on Thursday that the cleric had been in the habit of having canal knowledge of female members of his church who were in one need or the other, to provide succour for them. The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Joshua Ukandu, confirmed the incident to our correspondent.

He said the suspect was in their custody even as an investigation was ongoing on the matter. He said, “Yes, the bishop is with us here at the police headquarters, Abakaliki. I don’t have any other information as the case is under investigation.“On Wednesday, October 1, he was arrested by our men and brought to the state police command over the act.”

However, in a viral video on social media, the victim said that she started living with the cleric following her health condition after the decision of the cleric and her family that she should be living in the church to enable her to be healed from her illness through divine treatment. She lamented that the “spiritual healing” failed to solve her case as it worsened. She alleged that the bishop had assured her that a seven-day sex with him was all she needed for her genotype to change from SS to AA.

She further stated that because of her desperation to survive the sickness that had already taken the lives of her three other siblings, she gave in to the option. She lamented that after the seven-day sexual intercourse with the general overseer, her health issues became compounded, and she raised the alarm and informed her sister about it. Her elder sister, according to her, stepped into the matter and insisted she must return home since the so-called divine treatment was no longer working.

The victim said, “The Bishop repeatedly threatened to upload pictures of our sexual activities if I left him.” According to her, she later left the cleric and went back to her village, only to see her nude pictures with the cleric on social media, eliciting reactions.Meanwhile, Onyeagoziri has denied having any sexual intercourse with the victim, adding that his phone was stolen and those who stole the phone used Artificial Intelligence to post his “doctored” nudity with that of the girl.

He said, “My phone was stolen earlier this month, and after all efforts by those in possession of the phone to extort me failed, they resorted to denting my image. Those pictures you see are doctored. They aren’t real.”

Crime Watch: You Cannot Say I Should Be Responsible For Naming Financiers Of Terror — Buratai

Former Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, has said he should not be held responsible for naming individuals allegedly financing terrorism in Nigeria, stressing that the responsibility lies with the appropriate government agencies. Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Buratai explained that the relevant authorities are aware of those behind terror financing but have not made their identities public for reasons known to them. He maintained that action, rather than public disclosure, should be the priority in addressing the issue. He also clarified that decisions regarding the rehabilitation of repentant Boko Haram members were taken by the government, not the military. According to him, the army’s role was limited to offering surrender options during counterinsurgency operations and handing over repentant individuals to the appropriate agencies for deradicalization and reintegration. Buratai further called for improved intelligence gathering and increased recruitment of security personnel to better tackle Nigeria’s ongoing security challenges.

Crime Watch: Why I Took Action Against Native Doctors Promising Wealth Without Work — Soludo

Anambra State Governor, Charles Soludo, has explained that his administration’s recent crackdown on some native doctors is aimed at curbing criminal activities disguised as traditional practices. Speaking during a media chat in Awka, he stressed that while his government fully respects freedom of religion and traditional worship, it will not tolerate acts that promote crime under the guise of spirituality. Soludo distinguished between genuine traditional religion and what he described as “criminal idolatry,” noting that some individuals have allegedly used traditional practices to aid kidnappers, armed robbers, and internet fraudsters through charms, rituals, and other illicit means. He added that such practices, including alleged money rituals and the preparation of charms for criminal enterprises, have no connection to authentic traditional beliefs and must be stopped. The governor further disclosed that the state has been taking enforcement actions, including arrests and prosecutions of individuals linked to such activities. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining public safety while protecting lawful religious and cultural practices.
