Kaduna State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected the outcome of last Saturday’s by-elections in Basawa, Zaria Kewaye State constituencies and Chikun/Kajuru federal constituencies, describing the process as fraught with irregularities, intimidation and undemocratic practices.

In a statement issued yesterday by the state party chairman, Edward Percy Masha, the PDP accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of employing what it termed “gestapo and commando tactics” to undermine the credibility of the electoral process. The by-elections, which were held on August 16, 2025, to fill vacant legislative seats in the affected constituencies, saw the APC declared winner in all three races.

However, the PDP alleged that its candidate for the Chikun/Kajuru federal constituency was abducted, while members of its campaign committee were unlawfully detained. The party also accused government agents of seizing funds meant for election logistics and engaging in massive vote buying across polling units.“

These acts were carried out in full public glare, showcasing the APC’s shameless disregard for democracy and rule of law,” the statement said.Sir Masha stated that the party will consult with its candidates, stakeholders, and legal team to determine its next line of action, including possible litigation.

He said the PDP remains committed to defending the democratic will of the people of Kaduna State. While appreciating its supporters and voters for what it described as “overwhelming support” during the elections, the party decried the prevailing political atmosphere in the state, noting that the low voter turnout reflected deep-seated public disillusionment.“

The unprecedented low voter turnout is a testament to the lack of confidence in the process, exacerbated by Governor Uba Sani’s failure to conduct the 2024 local government elections,” Masha said.

He warned that if the current “undemocratic trend” continues unchecked, voter apathy may worsen ahead of the 2027 general elections.Despite the setbacks, the party reiterated its commitment to internal reforms, rebuilding grassroots structures, and delivering credible representation to the people of Kaduna State.“We urge the good people of Kaduna State to continue trusting and supporting the PDP.

Together, we will restore dignity, fairness, and genuine democracy in our dear state”, the statement added.
