Party urges Senate to enforce constitutional provisions following alleged defection
The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has called on the Nigerian Senate to declare the seat of Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe vacant following his alleged defection from the party.
The party made the demand in a statement, insisting that the Senate must act in line with constitutional provisions governing defection by elected lawmakers.
APGA argued that the senator’s continued stay in office after leaving the platform on which he was elected undermines democratic principles.
It maintained that the Nigerian Constitution provides clear guidelines on when a lawmaker’s seat should be declared vacant in cases of party defection.
The party further urged the Senate leadership to uphold the rule of law and protect the integrity of the legislative institution.
According to APGA, failure to act decisively on such matters could set a dangerous precedent for party discipline and political accountability.
The statement emphasized that political office is tied to party mandates, and any breach should attract appropriate constitutional consequences.
APGA also stressed the importance of fairness and consistency in handling similar cases across political parties in the National Assembly.
The development has reignited debates around Nigeria’s defection laws and the autonomy of elected representatives within the legislature.
As of the time of filing this report, Senator Abaribe has not publicly responded to the call by APGA.
